MATH-ish Book Study Session 1 Recap

MATH-ish Book Study Session 1 Recap

Dear Reader,

Thank you to all those who attended the first session of the MATH-ish book study. We were joined by educators from all over the country, and even the Philippines! A wonderful conversation was had as we explored the first two chapters of Jo Boaler's new book, MATH-ish. Several themes and key ideas were discussed, but one major take-away from the session was that we need to shift away from narrow math - the subject of procedures and algorithms that lead us to a correct answer, and start showing math as a creative and diverse discipline that is full of multiple strategies and viewpoints. We need to teach students how to problem solve and make sense of the world around them and it starts with valuing diverse ideas and fostering a growth mindset. See our generated list of key ideas and themes in the slide deck below.

There were some questions that arose during the session. A few of these are below:

  1. How do we get away from the performance culture and heavy emphasis on covering all the standards?
  2. BTC suggests that group roles are not as helpful for student thinking. I’m curious about roles that support meta cognition in a thinking classroom?

I will attempt to answer these and others in my next blog post so be on the look our for that. In the meantime, please enjoy the following resources from the session:
